I'm still feeling less than enthused. Last night was better than last week, but still not good, especially this deep into the season. I think I can sum up my take in two words: overproduced and under-executed.
I almost turned the show off last night, I really did. My husband and son have a regular show they watch on Monday nights and at certain points I was ready to call out to them that they could have the big screen tv in the family room.
I'm glad I didn't do that, though, otherwise I would have missed that gorgeous fox trot by Val and Rumer, right at the end. I ended up giving them all my votes based on that one dance.
I may go into *dances only* watching on utube for the rest of the season. I've done it before and it works great for tuning out all the grating elements of the show (like the judges). I may also skip viewing Nastia and Sasha's dance, whatever it is, because I'm too afraid Derek's going to cast himself in the role of a potted palm or something. I mean, I understand that the show wants him visible to keep his fan block tuned in, but sheesh.

I've gotten to the point where I no longer care enough about who wins to bother giving the show my complete attention. Watching Sharna and Noah get criticized for their routine looking like a group dance by Len and then seeing Len rave over Nastia's performance which was even more of a group dance as she danced with Derek as well as Sasha, was too much for me. I agree that there is much too much of these group efforts this year but that should have been shut down before the first episode ever went to air. It is obvious that this is where the show runners want things to go and they will lose me after this season.
I have to add that it was nice to see Julianne back with a normal hair colour and looking steamy with her Marilyn Monroe style dress. She is a very sexy lady and not afraid to show it. It is a shame that she is in a no win position with both her brother and a cousin performing on the show. She would be better able to do her job without the familial conflict of interest she is put through on every show.

When DWTS first aired it was more of a dancing show with little to distract from the dancers. I think that after all these seasons maybe people would get bored and the producers have gone to the Broadway style of show in the hopes of attracting a broader range of viewers. Along with these numbers I hope that the cast not always needs to have someone with physical disabilities and a couple of seniors who have no chance of advancing more than a few shows. Len used to dock marks for dances with gimmicks, now accepts these group numbers, so I would not doubt that the judges are told what to do by the producers. Does anyone think that the voting is true or as many think, is rigged? People risk injuries and put their lives on hold to be on this show, so it is more than just entertainment for the contestants, not to mention there is money involved for each week they are on.

In all truth this has been a dud of a season to me. And it was heralded with great fanfare as an anniversary season of magic. I'm getting my enjoyment from Robert and Kym and sometimes Noah and Sharna but the Nastia\Derek focus is really grating on me. Why couldn't His Houghness have just stepped back and let Sasha have his moment?

I really like Dereck, not just his talent, but also his personality. But even for a fan like me last night was a bit much. I too wished that he let Sasha have his moment. I am a fan of Robert as well, it will not be the same when he gets eliminated. Am I being mean when I say I do not enjoy Noah at all? I didn't enjoy Amy last season either and I have this guilt feeling that I am cold hearted. From seasons past I was not like that, I would have given Heather Mills a few breaks, which the judges certainly did not. Marlee Matlin who could not hear the music did not seem to get preferential treatment either. That is what turned me off the show last night, the unrealistic marking of the judges. That is not showing respect for what someone with a disability is capable of doing and feeling that they can cope without being fawned over.

Hi, all...
Firedrake, I'm having the same feeling about this season maybe being my last as a viewer. I've stuck with the show through so many changes I disliked because above all I loved the dancing. But as Jennifer says, they've pretty much incorporated a Broadway style of production number and now there are so many of them that the show is barely recognizable from how it started out.
The other day I was reading over at ABC and I realized I'm just about the only person who thinks the whole judging panel should be replaced. Not only did there used to be a bunch of us who thought so, we were probably in the majority. I belatedly figured out I'm probably the only one left with that opinion because all the others became some of the 7-8 million people who've stopped watching the show.
The board is waaaay down in the number of posters participating. There used to be pages and pages of posts. Now most of the time two days of postings fit on the front page. Many of the people still there are for the most part accepting and even happy with everything the show does. People used to crack jokes whenever a poster would say "I'll never watch again". "Oh sure," the responses would say. Well as it turns out those posters did mean what they said--they're gone!
Jennifer, don't feel badly about your preferences as a fan, and I say that as someone who's been giving Noah some of my votes for the past many weeks (though didn't last night). I do know how you feel, though--I didn't feel good about saying I had decided not to vote for Willow because as great as she'd been doing, and as nice and as hard working as she was, I didn't want the show to keep booking fourteen year olds. I just think the celebrities should at least be old enough to express the Mars-Venus elements that are part of most of the dance styles. I have nothing against the underage stars and I've voted for some of them, but they should at least be old enough to portray a young romantic interest, as Sadie was able to do in the beautiful foxtrot trio, and as Shawn was able to do in the PYT cha cha. Drop the age below 16-17 and it becomes impossible.
But anyway, those are just our preferences as fans--we're allowed to have them.
And I like Derek, too--tristanfan will vouch for me. And I truly do understand why the show thinks it's so important for him to be visible. But last night was just ridiculous.
