While the routine choreographed by Derek for the Trio dance was fun to watch, it did not qualify as a true trio dance as the other did. A trio dance as has always been performed on the show involves all three partners dancing together, not two separate scenarios where one person dances with two partners at different times. It was little different from the many, many routines danced this year with troupe members as background dancers. I would have given it four 8s, not higher, just because it did not fit the criteria of a true trio dance.

Ah, but we're talking Derek here. He is judged on another level altogether.

Not on a different level, just by different rules. Or more accurately - no rules apply to him or his partner.
